Oval cut diamond engagement rings are based upon the configurations of the round brilliant diamond. The oval diamond was created by Lazare Kaplan in the early 1960s, as a variation of the more common round brilliant.
Similar to the pear shaped diamond engagement ring, the oval cut diamond provides a flattering illusion of length to the hand, which, as a result, offers a slimming effect. It also accentuates long, slender fingers. However, similar to the pear shaped diamond, the oval cut can experience the unwanted bow-tie effect, which is a dark area toward the center of the diamond. These defects are typically obvious upon immediate inspection, meaning if you don’t see it prior to your purchase, your diamond has likely avoided this effect.
An oval diamond’s length-to-width ratio will determine the diamond’s outline, or, in other words, the way it will look when viewed from above.
