The Asscher cut diamond's classic squared look is achieved through true mastery and craftsmanship of master diamond cutters, who cut through the rough with precision to achieve the perfectly symmetrical length-to-width ratio necessary with this cut. It is a modified version of the emerald cut diamond, but has a squared look, rather than rectangular. It also features a smaller table, deeper pavilion, and bigger step facets.
As a result of its squared look and wider corners, the Asscher captures a significant amount of light that produce a pattern of repeated squares that is unique to the Asscher cut.
The Asscher cut diamond, a popular choice for engagement and anniversary rings, was designed by Joseph Asscher in 1902, and remains a hallmark part of the famed Royal Asscher Diamond Company, based in Amsterdam, with headquarters in NYC and Tokyo.
In 1999, the great-grandsons of Joseph Asscher committed themselves to updating the great Asscher cut, using the benefits of modern technology. As a result, the Royal Asscher Cut was born, which features 74 facets (the original Asscher has 58), all measured for absolute accuracy.
It's unfortunate that in modern times, the name Asscher has been used to describe any square-emerald cut. But a true Asscher cut follows specific and definitive criteria, which many square-cuts do not adhere to. If you're interested in an Asscher cut diamond engagement or anniversary ring, it's important you work with a reputable merchant who can provide you the evidence that the stone you're looking at does, in fact, adhere to the strict criteria laid out by Joseph Asscher.
At Mark Broumand, our selection of Asscher cut diamond engagement rings and anniversary rings give off broad, dramatic flashes of light. Our designs and settings range, and can be customized to match your specific taste.
