Romantic Antique Cut Diamond Rings

Treasured for their vintage look and rarity, antique cut diamond rings are produced today using technology to create the facet patterns used in eras past. Antique cut diamond rings are fashioned from one of four standard antique cuts: Single Cut, Rose Cut, Old Mine Cut and the Old European Cut. Mark Broumand carries a beautiful selection of old European cuts, Old Mine cuts and antique cushion cuts, which were evolutionary modifications of the four benchmark antiques.

The Old Mine Cut, has gently rounded corners and a quadrilateral girdle. The table on this cut is small and the culet is large and flat. This diamond cut is heavy on the crown and the bottom. This stone has 58 “chunky” looking facets and was prevalent during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Many of these diamonds followed the rough octahedral shape and cutting techniques available at the time resulted in a square or rectangular stones that were often not uniform. The antique cushion cut followed the form of the old mine, with slight variations.

The predecessor to the modern Round Brilliant, the Old European cut returned to a circular girdle on a 58-facet stone. The table was small with a substantial crown and great overall depth for the time. The pavilion facets were much more uniform than the Old Mine Cut. The light dispersion in this diamond cut radiated back off the culet more evenly. This gave the Old European quite a sparkle for diamond cuts of the time period. This cut was prevalent from the 1800s until the Art Deco Period.

Mark Broumand captures the beauty of these vintage style stones in the antique cut diamond rings he has selected or hand crafted. It is important to note that these beauties cannot be compared to today's diamond standards, since the antiques are truly a different cut than moderns. These stones capture the character and beauty of times past when diamonds were cut to be viewed by candlelight. If you feel that the contemporary diamonds are more your style, Mark also has an extensive selection of modern round cut diamond rings and brilliant and fiery cushion cut engagement rings in his selection.
