An exceptional quality rough diamond is needed, since imperfections may be visibly apparent through the large table (flat top facet of a diamond). Any imperfections in a rough diamond are usually found nearest the short ends or corners of the diamond so that blemishes are hidden within the additional facets that intersect in this area. This shape is an excellent choice for larger, high quality stones since approximately 80% of the rough diamond is retained.

An emerald cut diamond has step-cuts that are long and narrow, which are cut into the pavilion (lower part of the diamond). Facets vary in numbers between 50 and 58. The ideal length to width ratio of the emerald cut is 1.4:1 or a range between 1.3 and 1.5:1. Personal preference should determine if you desire an emerald cut with more of a square or rectangular shape.
