The Cushion Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

A cushion cut diamond engagement ring features a fiery square-shaped gemstone with large facets and softly rounded corners. The shape is often described as a hybrid of a rectangle and oval. The cut is rather rare, even though the cushion cut is widely known in famous diamonds such as the Hope (45.45 carats), Regent (140.5 carats) and Yellow Tiffany (128.54 carats).

Fashioned after the 58-facet Old Mine, this diamond shape has been around for nearly 200 years. It was as popular in its time as the round brilliant is today. The modern cushion showcases 64 facets. Modern cushions have a large table, larger facets and the facet patterns highlight the diamond’s clarity and increase the brilliance of the stone. A cushion with longer facets will create broader flashes of fire, like those seen in the rich, vintage style antique cushion engagement rings. Shorter facets result in more precise bursts of fire often referred to as “pinfire”.

The cushion returns light in chunkier patterns than many other modern cuts. Marcel Tolkowsky’s scientific research of a diamond's light behavior in the 1920s was used to enhance the antique cushion cut stone by enlarging the table (flat top of the diamond), decreasing the size of the culet (bottom point) and enhancing the facets. These changes amplified the lumen of the stone. Many buyers are attracted to the scarcity of the shape and the feel of the stone that combines the classic romantic look with modern day fire.

While less brilliant than the modern round brilliant cut, cushions often render a more intense fire than other modern cuts. Cushion diamonds generally display one of three fundamental facet patterns which can create varied appearances, from larger, defined facets to a "crushed ice" look. The shape of the stone can also vary between diamonds; some will have more rounded edges while others have edges that are more linear. Personal preference should dictate which shape and facet pattern that you prefer.
