Custom Design a Pear Shaped Diamond Ring

A Pear Shaped diamond ring is a unique hybrid of the round brilliant cut and Marquise cut. One end is perfectly round while the other narrows to the tapered point, which is why this cut is also referred to as the "teardrop cut". This special ring is usually worn with the tapered end towards the fingernail, visually slimming the finger of the wearer. It also creates an elongating effect for people with smaller hands and shorter fingers.

The brilliance in pears is similar to that of a round cut. In the late 15th century, the diamond polishing wheel was created by Lodewyk van Berquem. This invention allowed him to optimize the light reflection of a stone by polishing the facets. His work also concentrated on the symmetry of the facets within a stone and led him to the first Pear-Shaped, "Briolette" or "Pendeloque" diamond cut. Over many centuries, the shape went through different phases to change the shape until the early 20th century, when the modern pear-shape evolved into the stone we admire today. Symmetry is important in a pear shape and all matching sides should be identical to the other. The stone should not possess any rough edges.

Because of the shape of the stone, inclusions and flaws may often be placed at the narrow point of the diamond. If the end is properly set with a prong, it is possible that these inclusions will be invisible once set. A prong on the sharp point will also help prevent damage to the narrow tip, which is the most delicate area of the stone. The elongated shape may suffer from a "bowtie effect", where a bowtie-shaped shadow may be seen inside the wider, round end of the stone. This will vary by each individual diamond and can only be determined upon visual inspection of images or the stone itself.
